Georgia Legal Services Program (GLSP) is a statewide non-profit law firm serving 154 counties in Georgia outside the five-county metropolitan Atlanta area. Those five counties are served by the. In Albany, Athens, Augusta, Brunswick/Waycross, Columbus, Dalton, Piedmont, Gainesville, Macon, Savannah, and Valdosta. We also have a in Atlanta which serves migrant and seasonal farmworkers throughout the state.

Each office is responsible for serving clients in its home county and surrounding counties. Staff attorneys and paralegals ride circuit to two or more counties each, seeing clients at welfare offices, courthouses, local social service agencies, libraries or other locations. Every office has a toll-free number which facilitates access by clients. We provide representation to eligible clients in selected civil matters.

We do not handle criminal cases. We do not handle fee-generating cases where a person may obtain representation from the private bar. We are not federal or state employees but must follow federal law and regulations under the Legal Services Corporation Act, 42 U.S.C. §§ 2996 et seq. And 45 C.F.R.

The LSC Act and regulations establish other restrictions and conditions on the kinds of services we may offer to clients, and also prohibit us from representing certain kinds of clients, such as certain undocumented aliens. In addition to these offices, the firm has a Central Office in Atlanta which acts as an administrative and backup support office for the firm.

Top management of the firm is provided by the Executive Director, the Director of Litigation, the Associate Director, and the Finance Director. Other staff members in the Central Office provide staff training, fundraising, technical assistance with emerging issues and complex advocacy, information technology services, and accounting services. The Program sponsors a wide variety of training for all staff, including training in such skill areas as interviewing and counseling, trial tactics, evidence, negotiations, legal writing, and computer skills, as well as specialized workshops in areas such as public assistance programs, family law, housing law, and so forth. Legal backup and support services are supplied by a group of senior staff, most of whom are housed in Atlanta, who specialize in areas of law such as health, public assistance, housing, mental health, education, and family law. These attorneys provide support in specific cases, participate in training in their areas of expertise, and provide generalized backup through developing manuals and memos which are available throughout the Program.
